Spills happen!  Spill kits are part of a proper spill containment plan, and help to keep you safe from unexpected spills or leaks. For a fast response, kits should be located where an incident is most likely to occur.... shipping and receiving, chemical storage areas, hydrocarbon storage areas and/or in vehicles.

Similar to first aid kits, spill kits should only be used in an emergency. Best practice is to draw day to day sorbent pads and socs from your store  location.  Check the contents of your kits during safety walks/tours to make sure they’re still complete.

The first step is to make sure that you have the right kind and size of kit. A universal kit cleans up all liquid spills, an oil only kit works only with hydrocarbons (gas, diesel and oil), and a chemical kit is specific for all chemical spills including acids.

Let’s take a look in one of the Brady SPC spill kits to give you an idea of what’s inside. This is a portable kit for up to 5 gallons of liquids – but we have kit sizes all the way to 95 gallons.

Most kits will have similar items – just more or less numbers of pads and socs.  Some kits will have extra tools such as brooms and shovels, others will have more PPE.

In general – (open kit) – you have:

  1. Instruction sheet on what to with the spill.
  2. Safety nitrile gloves for a safe clean up (possibly goggles)
  3. Socs to contain the spill – watch for a drain and prevent the spill from flowing into it.
  4. Pads to help with the clean up.
  5. Hazmat bag(s) for the disposal – Please dispose of the material as if it was the liquid that you just cleaned up – your Province has guidelines for proper disposal.
