Since April 1st, 2019, all work undertaken must comply with the Quebec Construction Code Chapter V - Electricity. The following is a summary of the eight most significant changes to this new version of the code.

1. Permissible Currents in Wires and Cables

The permissible currents in wires and cables are mainly increased. The selection is now limited by three temperature values (60 °C, 75 °C, 90 °C), depending on the minimum temperatures of the equipment. These changes affect all facilities in all sectors.

2. Anti-Arc Circuit Breaker

Branches supplying 120 V, 15 or 20 A sockets in the housings must be protected by an anti-arc circuit breaker. Some exceptions include lighting circuits, bathroom outlets, kitchen countertop outlets, the refrigerator, bilge pump.

3. Charging Station for an Electric Vehicle

For each new individual dwelling unit with a garage, carport or parking space, it is now required to install the infrastructure (cable or conduit) in anticipation of a charging station.

4. Socket Outlets with Shutters

Shutter-type electrical outlets of the CSA 5-15R and CSA 5-20R types are now mandatory in new housing and daycare centres and when replacing outlets in existing housing and daycare centres.

5. Subbase for 320 A Meter

A new type of subbase with a nominal capacity of 320 A is now accepted. However, it must have a means of bypass that allows the installation and removal of the meter without danger.

6. Sockets Exposed to Bad Weather

Regular 15 A or 20 A to 120 V or 240 V sockets, when exposed to bad weather, require covers waterproof (whether or not a plug is inserted into the socket) and a mandatory "Extra Duty" or "Wet Location" marking.

7. Materials for Grounding Conductors

The materials permitted for use in grounding conductors are copper, aluminum and other materials as long as they meet strict criteria. Copper clad laminated copper is prohibited as a grounding material.

8. Sockets for the Maintenance of Rooftop Equipment

Electrical outlets to facilitate the maintenance of air conditioning, heating, ventilation or other equipment on buildings other than for housing must be of 5-20R configuration.
